Divya Tiwary: Journalist & writter In a country like America, the global superpower in Washington, the health status of pregnant women is not good. In a recent research report, the situation in the US is quite serious in the case of pregnant women in developed countries. There are many other things which are more tragic than not saving a woman’s life during delivery or a few days later. Women die during the delivery of 700–800 annually. In some cases, the maternal mortality rate in America is several times higher than in European countries. While some figures are similar to Britain
However how these events are calculated. For this, World Health Organization publications and international standards are seen. That is, the woman’s life is known due to the complications that occur after pregnancy and up to six weeks after the end of pregnancy. In developed countries, such data is collected through the death registration system. In some cases, due to coding, the exact reason is not available, because doctors choose one of thousands of codes to show the cause of death.
It is usually considered a ‘medical problem’. According to Andrea Cranga of John Hopkins University, the US adopted a ‘checkbox’ showing the cause in the death certificate in 2003. It took 10 years for all states to adopt. From the years 2000 to 2014, the use of such data has increased by 80 percent in the study of maternal mortality. If there is no checkbox, then there is no number of such data and no study can be done on the causes of death.
However, there are also negligence-mistakes. Recently the death of a woman Lolder than 50 was shown in the checkbox which was a mistake. According to the data, 21 women out of every one lakh die during delivery. What are the shortcomings behind it, what are the reasons, at the moment no one is aware of it yet.
