CGI Birgunj organized a panel discussion on the topic ‘Prevalence of Tuberculosis in South East Asia with special reference to Nepal and india


Birgunj Nepal. As part of celebrations of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav (India @75) and to commemorate the ‘World Tuberculosis Day’, the Consulate General of India, Birgunj organized a panel discussion on the topic ‘Prevalence of Tuberculosis in South East Asia with special reference to Nepal and India’ on 24 March, 2023 inside the Consulate premises. Prof.Dr. Pramod Kumar Sarraf, Director, Narayani Central Hospital, Birgunj, Dr. Shyam Babu Sah,Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Bikas Shah, Pediatrician and Dr. Raju Jaiswal, MD ( Internal Medicine) from Narayani Central Hospital, Birgunj participated in the panel discussion. About 35 members of the Consulate attended the programme.

During his remarks, Consul General Nitesh Kumar spoke about the prevalence and severity of TB in India and the world and reiterated resolve of Govt. of India to eliminate tuberculosis by 2025 while global target to eliminate it is by 2030.

During their presentations, the panelist doctors apprised about history, symptoms, causes, diagnosis, prevention, treatment etc. of TB with special reference to its prevalence in areas clamped with poverty, malnutrition, uncleanaliness and other socio- economic backwardness. They informed that despite being a preventive and curable disease, TB is still a dangerous disease causing 10-15% deaths among infected patients worldwide. They also informed that TB causing bacteria ‘Mycobacterium tuberculosis’ primarily affects lungs but can also affect bone, kidney, intestine and virtually all other organs of the human body except hairs.

The panel discussion was followed by a Question & Answer session in which the participants cleared their doubts and queries about Tuberculosis from the Panelist Doctors. The programme was very informative and educative and it created good impact on the participants.
