By Prof. S. S. Dogra. In India’s democratic system, there are times when certain leaders emerge who go beyond the narrow definition of politics. They guide society, culture, sports, education, and youth empowerment in new directions. Among such visionary leaders of the 21st century, one of the most prominent names is Anurag Singh Thakur.
His personality is multifaceted — the discipline of a sportsman, the dedication of a soldier, the guidance of a teacher, and the devotion of a public servant. This is why he is not only one of the most loved Members of Parliament from Himachal Pradesh but has also carved a distinct identity in national politics.
Birth and Family Background
Anurag Singh Thakur was born on October 24, 1974, in a small village named Sameerpur in Hamirpur district, Himachal Pradesh. His family has always been devoted to service, moral values and public life. His father, Prof. Prem Kumar Dhumal, served twice as Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh and thrice as a Member of Parliament from Hamirpur. His mother, Mrs. Sheela Devi, has been the guiding light and ideal homemaker of the family.
From childhood, Anurag Thakur was nurtured in a political and socially conscious environment. The farsightedness, discipline, and spirit of public service of his father deeply influenced him and inspired him to dedicate himself to the nation’s welfare. This legacy helped shape him into a devoted leader and an efficient administrator.
Leadership and Discipline in Sports
Anurag Thakur has always had a deep connection with sports. He captained the Punjab Under-16 and Under-19 cricket teams and played an active role in the Ranji Trophy. The sense of teamwork, discipline and leadership he learned on the field became an inseparable part of his character.
These qualities are clearly visible in his political and social life. For him, sports are not merely competition but a means to teach discipline, leadership and team spirit in life.
Entry into Mainstream Politics
In 2008, Anurag Thakur entered politics by winning the Hamirpur Lok Sabha by-election. Thereafter, he continued his winning streak in the 2009, 2014, 2019 and 2024 general elections, becoming a five-time Member of Parliament.
His active participation and accountability towards the public were recognized when he was honored with the “Sansad Ratna Award” in 2019 for his outstanding parliamentary performance.
A Dynamic Young Himachali Leader
I first met Anurag Thakur on August 1, 2009, at Himachal Sadan, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi, for an interview for Krishi Jagran magazine. At that time, he was a newly elected MP at the beginning of his political journey. Yet, he displayed remarkable confidence, vision and a deep sense of public service.
His smile radiated warmth, and his way of communicating reflected humility and grace. He did not treat journalism as a mere formality but rather as an opportunity for meaningful dialogue. He listened patiently, respected differing views and responded thoughtfully. That interview was not just a professional encounter but a deeply inspiring conversation.
When I asked him about the youth, farmers and development plans of Himachal Pradesh, his answers reflected depth and practicality. It was then I realized that this young leader was not limited to rhetoric or appearances but truly understood ground realities and public emotions.
When I met him again during Himachal Day celebrations on January 25, I noticed a mature politician deeply committed to his party and people.
Youth Politics and Social Campaigns
From 2010 to 2016, Anurag Thakur served as the National President of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM). During his tenure, he mobilized the youth across the nation to participate in politics and nation-building.

During his tenure in the Union Government, he transformed programs like “Khelo India” and “Fit India Movement” into nationwide people’s movements, benefiting millions of children and youth and fostering a new culture of fitness and sports in India.
Military Discipline and Patriotism
In 2016, Anurag Thakur joined the Territorial Army as a Lieutenant and was promoted to the rank of Captain in 2021. His decision to wear the Army uniform while being an active MP reflects his belief that national service transcends all boundaries. This act serves as a strong message to the youth that serving the nation is not confined to one field alone.
Contributions as Union Minister
As part of the Central Government, Anurag Thakur has made significant contributions across various ministries. In 2019, he became the Minister of State for Finance and Corporate Affairs, and in 2021, he was appointed as the Minister of Information & Broadcasting and Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports (Independent Charge).
