Amidst a fierce conflict lasting over a month in West Asia, a piece of relieving news has emerged. Following an announcement by US President Donald Trump, Iran has also agreed to a two-week ceasefire. Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, has approved this agreement. Iran has described this agreement as a major victory for itself.

This information was provided citing Iran’s Mehr News Agency. According to a statement, this agreement was reached through the mediation of Pakistan. Iran’s Supreme National Security Council has confirmed it. Further negotiations for a permanent peace agreement will take place in Islamabad.

Key Terms of the Ceasefire:
Iran has placed several conditions for the ceasefire, the main ones being:

· Iran and the US will hold talks in Islamabad on April 11.
· The movement of ships in the Strait of Hormuz will be in coordination with the Iranian military.
· All warfare and attacks against the ‘Resistance Axis’ in the region must cease.
· The US must withdraw its forces from all its bases and facilities.
· A safe transit system is to be established in the Strait of Hormuz, in which Iran will have a primary role.
· Full compensation for damages incurred during the war must be paid to Iran.
· All primary and secondary sanctions imposed on Iran must be lifted.
· Iran’s frozen assets held abroad must be returned.
· All these conditions must be approved in a binding resolution by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi stated that if attacks on Iran cease, its military will also stop retaliatory actions. He thanked Pakistan’s Prime Minister and Field Marshal for their efforts towards peace in the region.

Agreement Regarding the Strait of Hormuz:
Iran stated that for two weeks, ships will be allowed safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. This permission will be based on coordination with the Iranian military and technical conditions.

Position of Israel and the United States:
According to a US news channel and Israel’s public broadcaster KAN, Israel has also agreed to the ceasefire. However, official confirmation is still pending. President Trump stated that the US has achieved many of its military objectives and that work is now underway on a long-term peace agreement. Trump also indicated that Iran’s 10-point proposal has been taken as the basis for negotiation.

This ceasefire is being considered a significant step towards peace after a long period of heightened tensions in West Asia.
