Sindhupalchok, October 18: Nepal’s Tatopani border point with China has temporarily reopened for three days to facilitate the import of goods ahead of the Dashain festival.
Cargo vehicles carrying goods from Xizang, an autonomous region of China, began entering Nepal early Sunday morning following the reopening.
According to Dipendra Prakash Giri, Chief of the Tatopani Customs Office, the Chinese side reopened the border temporarily to ensure a smooth supply of festive goods and other essential commodities in Nepal.
Budhraj Basnet, President of the Sindhupalchok Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said containers had queued up in the Liping and Kodari areas following the reopening. More than 45 containers were reportedly waiting to enter Nepal from Nyalam in China’s Xizang region.
China had announced the complete closure of the Tatopani border point from September 1, 2026, until further notice. The current reopening is temporary, with operations scheduled to continue for three days.
The reopening is expected to ease the movement of goods and support the supply of essential commodities during the Dashain festive season. However, the border’s operation beyond the three-day period remains uncertain.
