79th Independence Day of India Celebrated with Fervour at Embassy of India, Kathmandu

Kathmandu, 15 August 2025 – The Embassy of India in Kathmandu marked the 79th Independence Day of India with a vibrant celebration that brought together members of the Indian community in Nepal, friends of India, Embassy officials, and their families. The event reflected the shared cultural bonds and close ties between India and Nepal.

Flag Hoisting and Presidential Address

The ceremony began with the hoisting of the Indian national flag by the Ambassador of India to Nepal. This was followed by the broadcast of the Hon’ble President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu’s address to the nation on the eve of Independence Day. In her remarks, the President reflected on India’s remarkable progress over the past 78 years, highlighting achievements in economic growth, social development, and technological advancement.

Honouring Armed Forces Families

On this occasion, the Ambassador honoured the widows and next of kin of personnel of the Indian Armed Forces who laid down their lives in service to the nation. As a gesture of support, the Ambassador presented Army Group Insurance Fund (AGIF) cheques totalling NPR 6.4 crores to the families.

Support for Education in Nepal

The Embassy also announced a book grant for 39 schools and libraries across seven provinces and 21 districts of Nepal. The initiative aims to enhance access to quality educational resources, particularly for students in remote areas, thereby contributing to their academic growth and learning opportunities.

Cultural Performances and Participation

The celebrations witnessed enthusiastic participation from the Indian community, Nepalese well-wishers of India, and Embassy staff. Students from the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre of the Embassy and Kendriya Vidyalaya, Kathmandu presented lively cultural performances on patriotic songs, adding colour and energy to the event.

The 79th Independence Day celebrations in Kathmandu served not only as a commemoration of India’s freedom but also as a testament to the enduring friendship and cultural connections between India and Nepal.
