Washington, October 20, 2026, Himalini Online Desk. US President Donald Trump has renewed his call to rename the southwestern state of New Mexico as “New America,” arguing that the proposed change would enhance the state’s prestige, increase property values and boost residents’ incomes.
In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump said New Mexico should “immediately” change its name, adding that the state belongs to the United States and should have a name that reflects its American identity.
“The name would add great value and prestige to the State!” Trump wrote, claiming that the change would also increase residents’ pride in the American flag.
Constitutional Hurdles Remain
Trump’s proposal has revived debate over the historical identity of the state and the limits of presidential authority. The US president cannot unilaterally change the official name of a state. Such a move would require a constitutional and legislative process involving the state government and potentially federal authorities.
New Mexico’s Democratic Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has previously rejected the proposal, emphasising that the state’s name has deep historical roots predating the establishment of the United States.
The name “New Mexico” derives from the Spanish term “Nuevo México,” which was used for the region centuries before the modern nation of Mexico emerged. The state’s name is also explicitly recognised in its constitution.
Political leaders from different backgrounds have expressed opposition to treating the name and cultural heritage of the state as matters for political rebranding.
Part of Trump’s Broader Renaming Campaign
The latest proposal follows Trump’s earlier efforts to change the names of prominent geographical features. In January 2025, he signed an executive order directing federal agencies to use “Gulf of America” instead of “Gulf of Mexico” and to restore the name “Mount McKinley” for Alaska’s Denali.
His administration subsequently pursued the use of “Lake America” for Lake Ontario. Trump has also floated the idea of renaming the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean, suggesting names such as “Trump Ocean” or “Ocean of the Americas.”
These initiatives reflect his broader push to promote names he considers more representative of American national identity and historical legacy.
Proposal Faces Uncertainty
Despite Trump’s renewed appeal, no official change to New Mexico’s name has been announced. His claims that the proposed renaming would increase property values and incomes have not been supported by publicly presented evidence.
For now, the proposal remains a political suggestion rather than an approved state policy. Any attempt to implement it would face significant constitutional, legislative and political challenges.
