Madhur Sharma, New Delhi. Two days seminar on the Indian literature was organized by Indrprasth Reviewers Guild at Hansraj College Delhi University in collaboration with Maharishi Balmiki sanskrit university today, which had some of the leading scholars from across South Asia.
It was great to witness how Indian literature, and Sanskrit traditions in particular, are studied and respected abroad. A scholar from Sri Lanka, dressed in traditional saffron robes, said the greatest gift from India to their land has been Sanskrit and Buddhism.

‘The robes that I am wearing are a gift from India that have stayed constant with time even as other practices have evolved,’ the scholar said.
The thing that struck me most, however, was the disdain much of the India, scholars and intellectuals among them, have associated with Sanskrit and Indic traditions. The Indic school at the JNU witnessed an outrage, and almost all Indian universities (including the BHU) are short of faculties on Indic courses. It’s strange how people abroad respect Indian traditions whereas so many Indians are so eager to shun them.
