Chinese Foreign Minister to Visit India, Hopes for Improved Diplomatic Relations

Kathmandu: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is scheduled to visit India on August 18 under the Special Representatives mechanism for talks. Sources have confirmed that the Chinese leader will meet with India’s National Security Advisor, Ajit Doval.

This meeting comes ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s planned visit to China on August 31 to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit.

The visit takes place as both India and China continue efforts to rebuild their relationship, which was strained following the Galwan Valley border clash in 2020.

Last month, Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar visited China to participate in the SCO Foreign Ministers’ meeting, during which he also met with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi. Prior to that, in June, Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh visited China to attend the Defence Ministers’ meeting.

It has also been reported that India and China have directed their airlines to resume direct flights between New Delhi and Beijing.

In a related development, U.S. President Donald Trump has imposed a 50% tariff on Indian goods, prompting speculation that New Delhi may reconsider its approach to relations with China.

Leaders on both sides hope that these high-level visits will pave the way for improved diplomatic ties between the two countries.
