Prior to this, March held the record for the year with 120,516 arrivals.

A Rollercoaster of Monthly Arrivals The monthly trend of tourist arrivals reflects the traditional seasonal patterns of Nepal’s tourism industry. The year kicked off with 92,573 visitors in January, followed by steady growth in the spring season: 105,441 in February, peaking at 120,516 in March, and stabilizing at 107,934 in April.

May and June saw 102,626 and 91,363 arrivals, respectively. As expected, the onset of the monsoon season in July caused a temporary dip, bringing the numbers down to 76,037. However, the industry quickly rebounded with 91,056 visitors in August and 88,256 in September, setting the stage for the massive October boom where arrivals skyrocketed past the 132,000 mark.

India Leads the Chart, China and the US Follow Looking at the broader picture for the first ten months, India remains the undisputed top source market for Nepal’s tourism, contributing 187,172 visitors. China holds the second spot with 77,541 tourists, closely followed by the United States with 69,344.

Other significant contributors to Nepal’s tourism recovery include Bangladesh (32,374), the United Kingdom (31,120), and Australia (30,050). The country also welcomed a substantial number of visitors from Sri Lanka (19,083), Malaysia (15,117), Germany (15,068), and Japan (12,669).

The October Surprise: US Tops the Monthly List While India leads the annual aggregate, October presented a fascinating shift in demographics. The United States emerged as the largest source country for the month, sending 17,437 tourists to Nepal. India slipped to the second position for October with 12,097 arrivals, while China stood third with 11,695.

European and Oceanian markets also showed robust numbers in October, with 9,385 tourists from the UK and 9,352 from Australia. Other notable arrivals during the month included Germany (6,114), the Maldives (5,560), Bangladesh (4,893), and France (4,164).

The Autumn Allure The phenomenal surge in October is largely attributed to the autumn season, universally regarded as the prime time to visit Nepal. With the monsoon clouds clearing up, the crisp, favorable weather offers breathtaking, unobstructed views of the Himalayas. This creates the perfect environment for trekking, mountaineering, and other outdoor adventures, drawing thrill-seekers and nature lovers from across the globe.

Looking Ahead Crossing the symbolic one-million mark in just ten months is a massive confidence booster for Nepal’s tourism stakeholders and the broader economy. With the peak autumn season still underway, all eyes are now on the remaining two months of November and December, which will finalize the ultimate success story of Nepal’s 2026 tourism year.

Himalini Desk, Kathmandu, 3 October. Nepal’s tourism sector has hit a monumental milestone, welcoming over one million foreign tourists by air in the first ten months of 2026.
