That figure increased to Rs 47.36 crore in the second edition. Before the third season began, the association had already secured more than Rs 32 crore through broadcasting rights alone, underlining the tournament’s growing commercial appeal.

Broadcasting Rights Drive Commercial Growth

The rapid increase in broadcasting revenue is among the clearest indicators of the NPL’s expanding market value.

During the inaugural season, Action Sports acquired YouTube and domestic television broadcasting rights for Rs 75 lakh, with matches available to viewers free of charge. The second edition introduced paid digital viewing through DishHome, while Kantipur Television acquired domestic television rights for Rs 3 crore.

By the third edition, the value of domestic television broadcasting rights had risen to Rs 14.64 crore, excluding taxes. Himalayan Sports, under Himalayan Television, secured the rights at nearly five times the amount paid in the previous season.

The participation of international broadcaster Star Sports, which became associated with the tournament from its first edition, has also helped strengthen the NPL’s visibility and brand positioning.

The transition from free online broadcasts to paid digital access and higher-value television agreements signals a changing commercial landscape for Nepali cricket.

International Stars Raise the League’s Profile

The NPL’s growing appeal is also reflected in the quality of overseas players joining its franchises.

With approval from the International Cricket Council (ICC), the third edition has opened the door to a wider pool of active international players. Australian opening batter David Warner and West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell are among the major names expected to feature in the competition.

In earlier editions, restrictions limited the number of franchises that could recruit active players from Test-playing nations. The revised arrangement has expanded the opportunities for teams to attract established international talent.

The first season featured India’s Shikhar Dhawan with Karnali Yaks, while South Africa’s Faf du Plessis joined Biratnagar Kings in the second edition.

The arrival of internationally recognised players can strengthen the tournament’s competitive quality, attract larger audiences and increase the value of sponsorship and broadcasting partnerships.

Technology Brings the NPL Closer to Global Standards

One of the most significant developments in the third edition is the introduction of the Decision Review System (DRS), marking a major technological step for cricket played in Nepal.

The system will support reviews involving leg-before-wicket decisions, run-outs, stumpings and no-balls. Three-dimensional ball tracking will assist with LBW reviews, while artificial intelligence-based tools will support edge detection and additional ball and bowling analytics.

The technology is expected to improve decision-making and enhance the viewing experience for spectators.

In previous seasons, the cost of introducing DRS had been identified as a major obstacle. Its adoption in the third edition reflects the league’s growing capacity to invest in more sophisticated match operations.

The tournament has also developed its match-day infrastructure, with floodlights and improved spectator facilities helping create a more professional environment.

Sponsorship and Franchise Economics Gain Momentum

The league’s commercial growth is extending beyond broadcasting.

According to NPL franchise representatives cited in the Onlinekhabar report, sponsorship interest has increased substantially since the inaugural season. Niroj Khatiwada, chief executive of Janakpur Bolts, said sponsors had grown three to four times in number by the third edition, with companies increasingly willing to make investments of Rs 1 crore or more.

This growth points to rising confidence in cricket as a platform for brand visibility and consumer engagement.

Franchise economics have also expanded. The total amount received by the eight teams reportedly increased from Rs 3.16 crore in the first season to approximately Rs 16.19 crore in the second.

For sponsors and franchise owners, the NPL offers opportunities to connect with passionate supporters, build regional identities and develop long-term commercial partnerships.

However, sustaining this momentum will require franchises to establish stronger revenue models, improve financial discipline and deliver value to commercial partners beyond the tournament period.

Bigger Rewards for Players and Teams

The third edition has also brought an increase in prize money.

CAN has raised the champions’ prize from Rs 1.10 crore to Rs 1.50 crore. The runners-up will receive Rs 80 lakh, while the third- and fourth-placed teams will receive Rs 40 lakh and Rs 30 lakh, respectively.

Higher rewards can increase competitive incentives and reinforce the league’s position as a significant opportunity for domestic players.

The tournament’s recognition under the ICC framework is another important milestone. With official T20 status, player performances and records in the NPL can be recognised within the official record system, strengthening the competition’s sporting credibility.

CAN President Chatur Bahadur Chand has described establishing trust within the international cricket community as an important challenge during the league’s early development. Concerns surrounding transparency, payments to overseas players and the prevention of match-fixing required attention as the competition sought broader recognition.

Maintaining high standards in these areas will be essential to protecting the league’s reputation as its commercial value grows.

The Road Ahead: Turning Momentum into a Sustainable Cricket Economy

The NPL’s progress demonstrates the potential of Nepali cricket to develop into a more substantial sporting and entertainment industry.

Higher broadcasting revenues, international player participation, improved technology and increased sponsorship point to a competition that is gradually expanding beyond its domestic foundations.

The next phase, however, will depend on whether the league can translate early commercial success into lasting benefits for Nepali cricket.

That means investing in grassroots development, strengthening domestic player pathways, ensuring reliable payments, maintaining sporting integrity and distributing the benefits of growth across the wider cricket ecosystem.

There is also an opportunity to develop stronger digital products, expand international viewership, build year-round fan engagement and create new commercial opportunities around merchandise, events and franchise partnerships.

For Nepal, the NPL represents more than a series of T20 matches. It offers a potential platform for developing sporting talent, creating employment, attracting investment and strengthening the country’s presence in international cricket.

As its third edition begins, the league’s challenge is no longer simply to attract attention. It is to establish a sustainable model that converts rising popularity into long-term sporting and economic value.

Source: Onlinekhabar, and media report

Kathmandu, October 26, 2026 | Himalini Online.
