Washington \/Kathmandu \u2013 U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s latest trade moves have stirred debate among economists and strategists. While imposing the highest tariff rates in the world on India, Trump has granted China a 90-day grace period before new tariffs take effect. Analysts suggest the strategy is aimed at extracting concessions on intellectual property, technology transfer, and agricultural imports from Beijing \u2014 all while maximizing political gains at home.<\/p>\n
Under the new policy, a 25% tariff is already in force on Indian goods. If no agreement is reached, this will rise to 50% starting August 27, the steepest rate applied to any country globally. In contrast, China has been given until November to negotiate before facing similar measures.<\/p>\n
According to U.S. Trade Representative officials, trade talks with China are in their final phase, and the delay is meant to leave room for a possible deal. While the U.S. trade deficit with India is much smaller than with China, Trump\u2019s team reportedly sees India as a low-risk target politically. Imposing tariffs on India sends a strong signal of protectionism to domestic industries while keeping leverage over China for further negotiations.<\/p>\n
Experts point out that India lacks China\u2019s aggressive retaliatory capacity and is more dependent on the U.S. market, making it an easier immediate target. \u201cThe administration\u2019s aim is to ensure American consumers keep access to cheaper Chinese goods until domestic production ramps up,\u201d said Milaney Verma of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.<\/p>\n
Edward Alden of the Brookings Institution described the move as a \u201cdual-track\u201d strategy \u2014 pressuring India immediately while giving China time, thereby signaling that access to the U.S. market will increasingly depend on political bargaining.
