Unequivocally, It is the return of the supremacy of Hindu nationalism in Indian politics, yet with one fundamental difference: It is the rise of another messiah in the politics of Hindu nationalism. Significantly, defying all the naysayers’ poll prediction, where they have already written off Yogi Adityanath as the losing horse, more so, in the absence of active campaigning by the hitherto messiah of BJP, Narendra Modi, the sole guarantor of victory of BJP, the comfortable victory at the hustings, if the trend thus far is any given indication, even if not a landslide, though it is too early too negate it, indubitably vindicates the popularity of Yogi Adityanath in Uttar Pradesh. The glorious victory, especially against the backdrop of speculations galore that, given the alienation of Brahmin, a dominant community in Uttar Pradesh, comprising of almost 11 percent of total population, and the farmer community in Western Uttar Pradesh, in the wake of ‘farmers movement’, were destined to rock the boat of Yogi Adityanath, coupled with the news of BJP’s mascot, Narendra Modi skipping the campaigns, rendering the lesser mortal, Yogi Adityanath to take the lead in election campaigning. Small wonder then, the victory should be attributed exclusively to Yogi Adityanath. Moreover, the bigger message that reverberates from Uttar Pradesh to the fellow compatriots is this: A new messiah has arrived at the national scene who, if indications are to be construed as the new emerging trend in national politics: Uttar Pradesh is back in reckoning; the political power, even though on temporary basis, which has shifted to Gujarat, is re-adjusting itself; giving the power back to Uttar Pradesh to determine the political trajectory of the nation. Better still, the rise of Hindu nationalism which purportedly was hijacked by Narendra Modi as its sole mascot, now, has another formidable competitor in Yogi Adityanath. This is the most positive takeaways from Uttar Pradesh election.

In fact, the massive victory of BJP under the leadership of Yogi Adityanath, if the trend is to be taken as the conclusive evidence of the translation of this trend into seats, this writer too stands vindicated: The challenger to Narendra Modi has to come from inside, for none of the hitherto challengers from outside have the requisite mettle to upset Modi’s applecart. Also the fact that Yogi Adityanath dared to pick up the gauntlet against BJP’s hitherto considered mascot, Narendra Modi who alone had ensured the victory of BJP, unequivocally stands punctured at the altar of the BJP’s formidable victory at the hustings under Yogi, if the trend does translate into tangible seats–BJP is leading in 265 seats out of 379(The trend hitherto available as per Zee news). Whereas the S.P, which was considered as the close competitor, going to the extent of claiming a decisive victory, is languishing at 124 seats. Unequivocally, if Uttar Pradesh election is the vindication of the fact that, notwithstanding the dynasty of the first family desperately sticking to the leadership position, the party completely stands rejected, with the trend indicating the complete decimation of the party in Utter Pradesh and its pathetic performance in other states. Congress is languishing at the bottom with 6seats in Utter Pradesh. It is the time that the Congress should heed the voice of twenty three dissidents of the party and consequently shall banish the stranglehold of the dynasty of Nehru-Gandhi from Confess. Further, apart from Uttar Pradesh, if there is another message emanating from Punjab is any indication, it is the voters’ complete rejection of dynasty in politics–the trailing of dynasts in Punjab is the vindication of the new emerging public mindset to reject the dynastic politics which purportedly had taken Indian polity in its octopus like grip.

Indian polity, over decades, has been witnessing the diabolical spectacle of the supremacy of dynasty in determining the political trajectory of the nation. Regrettably, the common people who were the electors, the masters in a democracy, were disdainfully reduced to an inconsequential position of having no say once the election was over. The menace, if not arrested, was already escalating into a humongous crises for the nation–the situation was rapidly hurtling towards the rise of Principalities in the pre-independence phase(very poignantly described in my upcoming book A Journey from Rajneeti to Lokneeti), was purportedly halted, even if not totally nipped in bud in Punjab. Significantly, the phenomenal rise of AAP in Punjab is the glowing tribute to Arvind Kejriwal and his team’s robust strategising and deft calculation behind Aam Admi Party’s victory in Punjab. The people of Punjab, very rightly though, had rejected the traditional parties and extended their wholehearted faith in the ideology of AAP. This renewed message at the hustings, might galvanise other parties too, like Rashtriya Lokneeti Party to bridge its ongoing differences and concentrate its focus on winning elections, based on its spectacular vision as encapsulated in a Journey From Rajneeti to Lokneeti, penned by this author.

Yogi Adityanath

In hindsight, if the ongoing trends are any indication, the remarkable performance of BJP in Uttar Pradesh, where it is scripting a history–the party is returning to power after 35 years, after ruling for five years–is another victory of ‘developmental agenda’ being appropriately blended with the sunlit path of Hindu nationalism. India, being the eternal land of Hindus, should not give up on its very raison d’etre and summum bonum of Hinduism being the soul of Mother Bharti. The reconstruction of Ram Janna Bhoomie is the living testimony of the glory of the ascendancy of Hinduism yet again in the polity. Moreover, the victory of BJP –if the trend is suitably translated into seats–is the victory of Yogi Adityanath. Admittedly, the BJP, which hitherto was led by the whims and fancy of an individual leader, henceforth will have an equally formidable leader to dilute the impacts of ‘one man show’, for Adityanath is too intrepid and daring to be subordinated to an individual, however strong he may be. His point blank rejection of A. K. Sharna to accommodate him in the cabinet, is the living testimony of the same. Unequivocally, the grand victory of Yogi Adityanath, whereas on the one hand, ushers in the rise of an alternate face of leadership in BJP, a challenger to Modi from inside, which was an antidote to the institutionalisation of authoritarianism within BJP and the nation(please refer to my article: Yogi antidote to Modi phenomenon), on the other, it catapults Uttar Pradesh on to the central stage of Indian politics yet again, for the the shifting of nation’s focus from Gujarat to Uttar Pradesh is absolutely imperative, inasmuch as the absolute control of corporate houses from Gujarat is stultifying the vitality of the nation by enriching few at the cost of 1.30.billion of Indians. All said and done! India needs to cherish the rise of new messiah in Indian politics, one and only, Yogi Adityanath.

Vivekanand Jha, author of Delhi Beckons: RaGa for NaMo, 56 Inches and The Making of Narendra Modi, Unmaking of Jawaharlal.

Vivekanand Jha, an Author, Academician and Public Intellectual.
