Finally axe has fallen on Sushil Kumar Modi. The man who was absolutely content to play the 2nd fiddle to Nitish Kumar for decades, constrained the rise of BJP in Bihar for all these years, finally has no takers today in Bihar politics, as he is destined to be shunted to be Delhi so as to give a free hand to the new leadership of Bihar today. Sushil Kumar Modi, who was religiously following this writer’s article, and whom this writer had given a piece of advice : to quit being always the second man and aspire to become the chief minister of the BJP, finds himself absolutely isolated today, almost at the mercy of Modi-Shah duo. Interestingly, soon after my sensible advice to him, Sushil Kumar Modi, discontinued following my articles as religiously as he would before i had rendered him a piece of advice which proved so prophetic today.

Significantly, Sushil Kumar Modi played every trick up his sleeve to lead BJP in Bihar and remain a lackey to Nitish Kumar. Such was the quid pro quo relationship between the both that prompted Nitish Kumar, in the thick of his one upmanship with Narendra Modi, to dub him as version of Modi. In fact, Sushil Kumar Modi knew that if Nitish Kumar remained Bihar’s chief minister, his position as his deputy was almost a foregone conclusion. Unfortunately for him, he failed to take the cognizance of the fact that, notwithstanding his perfect equation with Nitish Kumar, his own bosses in Delhi-both Narendra Modi and Amit Shah -who were surely not enamoured of him, looked for the very first opportunity to force him out of his cozy equation with his long time friend Nitish Kumar. No wonder such an opportunity has arrived now when BJP has emerged as the second largest party in the state, outshining its long time alliance partner JDU. Hence in this backdrop, what BJP needs is anyone but a ‘yes man’ like Sushil Kumar Modi, whose complete capitulation before Nitish Kumar in such a situation as this, is absolutely uncalled for.
<img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="1913" data-permalink="https://himalini.com/en/is-it-the-end-of-the-road-to-bihar-politics-for-sushil-kumar-modi-vivekanand-jha.html/bollywood-actors-emraan-hashmi-and-vidya-balan-during-the-promotion-of-their-upcoming-film-ghanchakkar-in-mumbai-on-june-15-2013-photo-ians" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/himalini.com/en/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/sushil-kumar-modi-scaled.jpg?fit=2560%2C1808&ssl=1" data-orig-size="2560,1808" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"6.3","credit":"","camera":"NIKON D90","caption":"Patna: Janata Dal-United (JD-U) president Sharad Yadav with Bihar cheif minister nitish kumar addressing media persons after split 17-year-old alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at Patna on Sunday 16June 2013 Supporters of JD-U burst crackers after the split in Patna on June 16, 2013. Tarkishore Prasad, the four times MLA from Kathiar and Renu Devi, the three times MLA from Bettiah, are being speculated to be the two deputy chief ministers to make difficult the roads ahead for Nitish. Significantly, BJP, far withdrawn from its traditional Brahminical and Bania face, has been increasingly banking on the lower caste equation as a perfect permutation and combination to unsettle the caste arithmetic of the regional parties like RJD. With Tarkishore being an OBC and Renu Devi being an ECB, BJP is no more empathetic on placing its overwhelming faith in its traditional supporters among the upper castes. No wonder BJP is working to a game plan to foist a new albatross around the neck of Nitish Kumar by anointing two deputies to put a significant check and balance to the unbridled power that he had enjoyed when Sushil Kumar Modi was cosying up to him all this while by being his permanent ‘yes man’.

BJP is fastidiously working up to its own game plan: in the pre-election stage, it had deployed Chirag Paswan as the Hanuman of his version of Ram-Modi, for whom he was prepared to go to any extent to pierce his chest to show how Narendra Modi resided in his heart. Chirag did more then he was expected to: Cut Nitish to size, and contributed to BJP’s rise as the Bare Bhai. Significantly, where BJP has so wonderfully succeeded, the grand old Congress Party has so drastically failed. By virtue of a pillion ride in such states as Maharashtra, in the past, and Bihari now, BJP had proven to be the predator where it predates on its senior partner, significantly cutting them to size over a period of time. Previously it was Maharashtra, where the poor Udhav Thackray had learnt the bitter lesson to its utter dismay when it was far relegated to the second position, far behind that of BJP. Panic stricken Uddhav had to take an immediate stand to join the unconventional bandwagon of Congress and Sharad Pawar to protect its own existence, poor Nitish Kumar, as of now is left with no such option, apart from swallowing the bitter pills. Paradoxically, where BJP has so remarkably succeeded in ousting the drivers from their seats, catapulting itself from the pillion ride to that of piloting the ship, Congress is increasingly finding its pillion ride difficult, ending up as the unconscionable burden on the driver.

All said and done, the hitherto numero uno position of Sushil Kumar Modi, in Bihar BJP, appears to have become a thing of the past. For, BJP, emerging as the bigger party in the alliance, will demand its own pound of flesh now. Also, the central leadership of the BJP, which left no stone unturned to cut Nitish to size-first, by foisting Chirag Paswan, and now, by stopping Sushil Kumar Modi from cosying up to Nitish Kumar-will leverage all its new founded energy to constrain Nitish Kumar from exercising its unbridled power. But then Nitish Kumar too is adept in this game of political chess board, he is aware that as he has his own limitations, BJP too has a constraint of its manoeuvring space. If Nitish Kumar can no longer go to RJD, likewise, BJP has no option as of now other than banking upon Nitish Kumar to pilot the NDA ship. Hence, both the parties have their own compulsions to remain in the wedlock, despite mutual affection for each other being conspicuously missing.

Vivekanand Jha is an author of ‘Yes, I am Bihari’ and an upcoming book The People’s leader.

Vivekanand Jha is an author and a Public Intellectual.
